When I was a little girl, I was afraid of storms. But I wasn’t alone in this fear. My mother was absolutely petrified of storms. Just the sound of thunder was enough to send her flying out of bed and racing down the stairs to our basement, dragging me and my brother in her terrified wake.

Episode 148: Self Publishing Tips: Blurb vs. Synopsis


Dear Christian Indie,

Last week on the podcast, I found myself tripping over the pronunciation of the word, “synopsis.” Not only is it a difficult word to pronounce, it is a terrible thing to try to write. In fact, to try to condense a novel-length piece of work into a handful of words is impossible for some, causing them to reach out and hire someone to do the job for them.

To further confuse and possibly stymie the Indie Author, there is also a blurb to be written, which is an entirely different thing altogether and serves an entirely different purpose. Whereas a synopsis is designed to give a reader a fairly clear picture of what to expect from reading your book, the blurb is meant to be a “sample” of what you have to offer, in an attempt to convince the potential reader to take a chance on what you have created.

This week on the podcast we are going to dig deeper into what the blurb and synopsis are and how they are used, as well as tips and tools for writing them that will ensure you feel as equipped as anyone to market your book with success!

Will the pounding ever stop? Marissa sat back on her knees and inspected the sea of wood spreading before her. Only two more boards. At sixteen feet, that’s around sixteen more screws. She closed her eyes to meditate on the thought of standing upright again, willing herself to levitate toward that pretty adirondack chair over there, less than fifteen feet away from her aching bones.

We’ve all heard the expression, “green with envy.” As a child I never really understood why someone would be “green” with envy, so my immature mind decided the person was turning the color of money. After all, when you are very young, you think money is the only thing there is for people to be envious of one another about.

He poured rocks in the dungeon of his mind, each signifying a particular stressor. He gathered them together like dice in a Yahtzee game, putting them in an invisible cup which he could almost feel as he closed his hand into a fist, during dinners with friends or business meetings. His nails would press half circles into the meaty flesh of his palms as he mentally scooped up thoughts of a promotion or a raise or what Betty would say when she found out he had requested neither.

Episode 144: Writer’s Life: Love is Kind

Dear Christian Indie,

We have been thinking about “The Writer’s Life” on the podcast lately; specifically, what it means to live as a Christian writer. To this end, the other hosts and I have been discussing, point by point, the chapter of the Bible most associated with Christian love – 1 Corinthians 13.

Last week, we discussed how love is patient. This week, we are going to explore kindness in the life of the writer.

This week, we’ll ask ourselves some tough questions, including,

Are we kind to our characters?
Are we kind to ourselves?
Are we kind to our fellow writers, and to our community, in general?

We’ll also discuss the importance of being merciful with ourselves when we fall short of our own expectations for kind behavior.
