The brittle crunch of the leaves, long ago fallen from their original home but left unattended by the homeowners that lived in the “city” of the tiny town I grew up in will forever be a memory etched in my mind.

I moved to Florida three years ago, and this time of year has caused a bout of homesickness to overwhelm me each and every time the calendar moves from August to September. In my home state of Michigan, the leaves are turning color, the temperatures are falling, and the squirrels are getting plump as they prepare to hunker down for the long, cold winter.

I thought about wild horses the first time I cracked open my journal. The teacher had called the process of getting it all down on paper “caging the monkey mind,” but I never really resonated with monkeys. Monkeys were stooped and flung poop. Wild horses, running free, that was how I preferred to think of the unfettered thoughts in my brain.

“I don’t know, I think we need to go in an entirely different direction.”

Silence from those sitting around the table.

“Seriously, this isn’t going to work. Nobody cares about the nutrition as much as they care about the taste.”

Still silent.

“What we need to have is an ad campaign showing people enjoying the product, talking about how good it is, with close up shots to get them salivating and craving it.”

Some quiet mumbling from the other end of the conference table.

“Come on guys, does watching a couple jogging, or children at the doctor get you hungry?”

Shrugging of shoulders, paper shuffling, and looking down to avoid eye contact.

In the uncomfortable silence, Sheila turned to the whiteboard and began to doodle a picture of a person eating a veggie burger, their expression was excited and happy. The silence wore on.

She turned to face the conference table, looking at each person individually, nobody but Earl met her gaze.

“Earl,” she said. His shoulders immediately slumped. “What is your take on this?”

Earl shuffled his papers, picked up his pen, put it down again. Cleared his throat.

“Well, I mean, it sounds good and all, but…”

“But what?”

“But we made a top ten list!”

When I was a little girl, I was afraid of storms. But I wasn’t alone in this fear. My mother was absolutely petrified of storms. Just the sound of thunder was enough to send her flying out of bed and racing down the stairs to our basement, dragging me and my brother in her terrified wake.

Episode 148: Self Publishing Tips: Blurb vs. Synopsis

Dear Christian Indie,

Last week on the podcast, I found myself tripping over the pronunciation of the word, “synopsis.” Not only is it a difficult word to pronounce, it is a terrible thing to try to write. In fact, to try to condense a novel-length piece of work into a handful of words is impossible for some, causing them to reach out and hire someone to do the job for them.

To further confuse and possibly stymie the Indie Author, there is also a blurb to be written, which is an entirely different thing altogether and serves an entirely different purpose. Whereas a synopsis is designed to give a reader a fairly clear picture of what to expect from reading your book, the blurb is meant to be a “sample” of what you have to offer, in an attempt to convince the potential reader to take a chance on what you have created.

This week on the podcast we are going to dig deeper into what the blurb and synopsis are and how they are used, as well as tips and tools for writing them that will ensure you feel as equipped as anyone to market your book with success!
