Will the pounding ever stop? Marissa sat back on her knees and inspected the sea of wood spreading before her. Only two more boards. At sixteen feet, that’s around sixteen more screws. She closed her eyes to meditate on the thought of standing upright again, willing herself to levitate toward that pretty adirondack chair over there, less than fifteen feet away from her aching bones.

Episode 144: Writer’s Life: Love is Kind

Dear Christian Indie,

We have been thinking about “The Writer’s Life” on the podcast lately; specifically, what it means to live as a Christian writer. To this end, the other hosts and I have been discussing, point by point, the chapter of the Bible most associated with Christian love – 1 Corinthians 13.

Last week, we discussed how love is patient. This week, we are going to explore kindness in the life of the writer.

This week, we’ll ask ourselves some tough questions, including,

Are we kind to our characters?
Are we kind to ourselves?
Are we kind to our fellow writers, and to our community, in general?

We’ll also discuss the importance of being merciful with ourselves when we fall short of our own expectations for kind behavior.

Episode 134: Essential Writing Tips: Research Trips to Enhance Your Writing

Hi there, Indie!

“Write what you know.”

What more frustrating advice could anyone give young Jamie? After all, I was only a kid, and painfully aware that I didn’t really know much of anything!

Of course, with years and wisdom I was able to better process and utilize the sentiments of this communication and, in general, I feel the advice is wise. However, let’s say you want to write what you know, and you imagine an engaging tale about someone born in a region of the country (or world!) you have never visited? Or, imagine trying to write fanfic about Tina’s character, having never been to Alaska!

Episode 131: Self Publishing Tips: How to Use Hashtags

Hey there, Indies!

I saw an ad for a car insurance policy the other night, in which the entirety of the plot hinged upon the confusion caused by hashtags. The premise was, “only people “of a certain age” have this issue; but the more we chat about hashtags on the podcast, the more the other hosts and I realize uncertainty abounds upon this subject among folks of all age groups*.

Episode 129: Tools for Writers

Dear Christian Indies,

Writing used to be a relatively straightforward proposition; one made a series of marks on a surface using first only basic, blunt tools but later sophisticated implements and inks. These marks were known, inteligible symbols to other humans – a part of the universal code we now call, “common language.”  Today, there are just as many “right” ways to write a book as there are individual writing styles. This means many options are available for you, awesome Indie, when it comes to assembling your own tools of the writing trade!
