So lost in his own thoughts, Cade hadn’t heard Colleen approaching and the sound of her softly lilting Irish accent tinged with disgust made him jump. “Where’d you come from?”

“I was out back hanging the wash. What is that?” she asked, motionining her head in the direction of his lunch.

Marnie stormed through the door of Mr. Boss’s office and slammed the door shut behind her. It felt good, this physical and audible manifestation of the storm that was brewing beneath the surface of what she could only imagine was a hot, red face. But that satisfaction was short lived when the action did not elicit the response she had expected.

Autumn Leaves

The brittle crunch of the leaves, long ago fallen from their original home but left unattended by the homeowners that lived in the “city” of the tiny town I grew up in will forever be a memory etched in my mind.
