Dear Chirstian Indie,
I’ve got an experiment idea for you.
Just bring up the topic, “Hallmark Holiday Romance” in a room full of mixed company, then watch for the reactions. You’ll be sure to get an example of a sneer of disdain, a giggle of glee, and an expression of enraptured wistfulness and longing for that time of year! In fact, aside from the typically taboo subjects of politics and religion, I can think of little else that can cause such disparate reactions among people than the idea of a Hallmark Holiday movie.
That same sort of variation in reaction to the idea of writing a Hallmark Holiday romance happens among writers, as well, and we get it—the genre is certainly not for everyone. But, whether they make you groan-y or gleeful, cringy or cheerful, there is no denying that Hallmark Holiday Romance movies get big traction this time of year, and where there’s traction, there’s sales, and where there’s sales, there’s lessons to be learned that could possibly help any writer excel and improve.
So, this week on the podcast, we explore this particular type of story and what makes it so special and appealing. We help you decide whether or not tackling this type of book is right for you, and how you can write a Hallmark Holiday Romance with just as much commercial appeal as those cozy tales that appear on everyone’s screen this time of year.
See you there,
Jamie
